Youth workers’ competence development

We support youth workers in developing their competences so they can create meaningful, high-quality learning experiences for young people. Our work is based on a holistic understanding of competences: a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviours that youth workers bring into their work. We aim to support practitioners in reflecting upon and strengthening their professional practice in the European youth field.

Our activities for youth workers

We offer a range of learning opportunities for youth workers, in cooperation with National Agencies and partners across Europe.

These include:

  • YOCOMO residential courses
  • MOOCs: massive open online courses
  • YOCOMO Training of Trainers activities
  • Network courses run together with National Agencies and partners

These experiences help youth workers connect their practice with the competence model and strengthen their daily work with young people.

The Competence Model for Youth Workers (YOCOMO)
The YOCOMO competence model offers a clear framework for understanding what youth workers need in order to support young people effectively. It helps practitioners reflect on their role, identify areas for growth, and plan their own learning. A dedicated self-assessment tool supports youth workers in exploring where they are now and where they want to develop further.
Use the educational materials
To help you bring the YOCOMO approach into your everyday work, we provide posters, handouts and other learning materials. These resources make it easy to integrate the competence model into your activities, team development, or personal learning practice.
